Kim W
I was diagnosed 28 yrs of age in July 2002; I remember the exact date as it is the opposite of my birthday.
At the time I was juggling my nursing studies and work commitments, we were funnily enough studying the Lymphatic system when I started to think about my mum and her cancer diagnosis at a young age (38yrs old). About a week later it was that I found a very small lump during my routine self checks. Off to the doctors and then breast surgeon for a check and referral to a scan. We all presumed it would be just a cyst.
3 days later and I am rescheduling uni and my clinical placements so I can get the results... 8am app, "looks like you are going down the same path as your mum Kim, but don’t worry we will throw everything at this thing". I never did finish my clinical, I was in total denial. I had gone to this app on my own. I was a single mum of 3 kids recently separated and going through divorce.
I go for my bone scan and blood works, how daunting being injected with radioactive drugs. I was lying there praying that this thing has not spread.
5 days later and I am booked in for a lumpectomy I went back to the surgeon for follow up only to be told the margins weren’t clear and I had to have a mastectomy. The the cancer had spread to my lymph nodes and close to my chest wall.
5 days later again and I am on the operating table for my radical mastectomy.
October 2002 commenced my chemotherapy 3 months of AC and 3 months of Taxotere, followed by 6wks of Radiation. I ended up having a pic line in because my veins couldn’t stand the chemo. I returned to uni and completed some more exams, but struggled. Beginning of 2003 new semester, I returned to uni again, but couldn’t network the classes and radiation treatment, so dropped out of my nursing studies.
I met my now husband during my chemotherapy treatment, he was like a best mate to me.
My auntie died from secondary breast cancer in April 2003 and I also finished all my chemo and radiation.
In 2004 my Mum was diagnosed with secondary breast cancer and a brain tumour. in May 2004 mum passed away.
In July 2006 we were ecstatic to find out we were pregnant, 9 months on and I gave birth to a baby girl Chloe born on May 4th 2007.
During my pregnancy I found a lump in my left breast, which looked suspicious. I was 27 weeks pregnant when we found the lump. Thankfully the biopsy came back negative.
Finally November 2008 underwent Oorphorectomy, recently commenced Arimidex.
This year I will be celebrating my 8year cancer milestone.
