My journey began last July in 2009 when at age 28 I was diagnosed with breast cancer. My mum had breast cancer at 38; I knew the risks but
never took it seriously. I was devastated to think that if I had the testing before my diagnosis life would be different now! Hindsight is a frustrating thought! I was tested for the genes and had inherited BRCA2.
What followed my diagnosis was 14 months of hard work. I had chemo first to break down the massive tumour for six months – and it did, with my oncologist telling me that the chemo had turned the rock of cancer into Swiss cheese!
I had a double mastectomy following the chemo and had tissue expanders inserted during the same operation. Following the expansions I had 6 weeks of radiotherapy then recently in August I had my final operation of the expanders being replaced with permanent implants.
I had been nothing but positive throughout the last 15 months and that has been thanks to the amazing support of friends and family. I am happy with the way the surgery has gone, I love my new look and tell myself each day things can only get better. Positive thinking has got me through a journey that I will never forget and I also hope each day that this is the end of cancer for me forever.
I have been given many opportunities and shared experiences that I wouldn’t of been part of it if wasn’t for my cancer diagnosis. I believe you choose your own path to recovery and I wish all women the best in a long and healthy life.
